Mac Commercials That Speak Your Language

| | Comments (0)

Recently I was watching Mac commercials online as part of research for a project I'm working on. I was surprised to find that there are UK and Japanese versions of these commercials. It's funny to see the cultural differences and the different incarnations of Mac and PC. Maybe I'm biased, but I think the actors in the U.S. version do it the best. UK and Japan also have their own versions that suit their native audience more such as the "Naughty Step." It's interesting how much British humor differs from American humor. "Naughty Step" or "Art Language" would totally not work in the U.S. market. The actor who plays PC in the UK versions reminds me of Mike Myers. I think it would be funnier if Mike Myers actually played the part of PC in his fake British accent for the UK versions. There are also commercials created just for the Japanese market although I have no idea what they are talking about. It is fun to watch and try to interpret.

Take "iMovie", the Japanese version and compare that to "Better Results", the U.S. version. Although I don't understand any of the Japanese, I'm pretty sure that these two are the same idea. Not exactly the same, but pretty close. It's funny to see that in the Japanese version, it appears that PC is proud of his home movie and thinks the result is close to Mac's home movie whereas in the U.S. version, PC is afraid to show his home movie after seeing Mac's which looks so professional. Both versions end with PC's home movie presenting itself as a hairy guy dressed in drag. I don't know which one is funnier, but they are both very funny in their own ways.

The Mac commercials are entertaining to watch, but I find myself liking PC more because the actor who plays him in the American versions is so funny.
