Rising Price of Rice

For those of you who enjoy consuming the white fluffy stuff, the price of rice is expected to jump in the near future. Better stock up now. Apparently there is a shortage of rice. In all my life I've never heard of a shortage in rice. This sounds serious to me. I eat lots of rice. My favorite type is the jasmine long grain. Not big on short grain. It's like eating mush. Come to think of it, this could be a serious problem for lots of folks. People like me and all of Asia and Africa. It's like saying there's a shortage of food. For many people food is rice. How can you have chicken fried rice without the rice? Or congee? What about sushi rolls? This is a crisis! The beginning of the end of the world as we know it.

Ok, maybe I'm being a little dramatic. But I must say up until this point I've pretty much taken rice for granted. Not anymore. I'll be sure to eat every last grain in my bowl. All the times I left bits of rice in my bowl because I thought my stomach was too full to fit in a few more grains. "Oh no, it's too much... I'll explode," my stomach would say. Nonsense.

Mom used to say if I didn't eat all my rice in my bowl, I'd end up marrying a pockmarked husband with the same number of pockmarks as the grains left behind in my bowl. That never worked on me. But if she had said that one day we will run out of rice and never be able to eat it again then I probably would have finished my rice like I was told. Umm yeah... then again I was a kid and didn't like to eat so that probably wouldn't have worked either.
